Israel’s West Bank annexation move poses major test for Trump: Analysis

Sultan Barakat, Professor of Public Policy at Hamad bin Khalifa University, told Al Jazeera that Israel’s move to approve bills annexing the occupied West Bank undermines the Gaza ceasefire and risks reigniting conflict.
He noted that the original ceasefire deal and Arab normalisation agreements, including the Abraham Accords, were based on Israel’s pledge not to annex Palestinian land.
Barakat argued that some Israeli factions oppose peace to pursue total victory.
He added that Washington has tools to pressure Israel—such as delaying arms and financial support—and that Netanyahu faces mounting economic and political strain.
Barakat warned that defying the US at this stage could politically isolate Netanyahu.
